When you bring your puppy home it is SO EXCITING to show off the new baby. But that's just it... this is a new baby. Just like bringing home a new human baby, it is important to limit their exposure. New puppies have generally only had one or two sets of vaccinations when they get to their new home. The home they were born in has a controlled environment. No extra unknown dogs have come through the yard, kennels, or runs that could have been exposed to illnesses, especially one of the big SCARY ones.... PARVO.

Your furbaby has limited protection to these and other illnesses based on his and even his mother's deworming and vaccinations. Deworming should be administered at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 weeks old. Vaccinations are done at 6 and 8 weeks and then followed up by two more sets in 3 week intervals. Rabies is done around 12 weeks. Boosters are done every 1-3 years (This is a generally agreed upon schedule by most vets.)

You may want to bring your new puppy to the dog park, or grandma's house... or down the street. However, as per my vet's advice... "Your puppy is not fully protected against most covered illnesses until 2 weeks after the fourth set of vaccinations".

PLEASE follow your vet's advice. I am NOT a veterinarian. Though I work closely with a vet and have raised dogs for several years, it IS possible I could be wrong...  though I don't really think so!

                                                   Vaccinations are VERY important.
