Reading Your Puppy’s Body Language

The more we are able to communicate with our puppy the better our relationship will be. While it is important to teach our puppy words such as sit, down, stay, come, leave it, etc., body language can also help us to understand one another. Our body language tells a puppy a lot! For example, when we want our puppy to come, backing away from our puppy, getting low, putting our hands palm up and not making eye contact are all things we can do with our bodies to help make our puppy want to come to us. Jumping dogs? Turning our backs to them with our arms crossed is a clear sign to them we don't like that behavior. What about our puppies? Are there things they try to tell us with their body? Here is a quick overview of what they are trying to tell us:

MOUTH:

• Dogs pant to reduce stress.

• It is easy for kids to see and recognize.

• Panting means they are dealing with their stress. They are handling it OK.

• A closed tight mouth means stay away. They are not handling the stress well.

• Licking lips and a yawn at the same time means your dog is feeling conflict.

• Open mouth with a loose tongue tells us the dog is relaxed and not feeling stressed.

EYES:

• Half-moon eye = anxiety (no exceptions)

• If you notice the half-moon eye, teach your kids to NOT approach the dog. As a parent intervene.

• This sometimes occurs if a puppy is guarding a bone or his food dish so do socialization exercises to

eliminate the guarding behavior.

• Offer a treat as a replacement for a bone, ALWAYS TRADE UP!

• If there is tension in the face or eyes, give your puppy space.

BODY

• Dogs generally do NOT like hugs (being held tightly around their necks)

• Dogs can be trained to tolerate them though.

• Hugs are the major cause of facial bites to kids.

• Scratch his chest or neck instead.

• Give affection on your dog’s terms. Sometimes he may just need quiet time.

• Loose, noodle-like body language tells us the dog is approachable.

• Tight, stiff, tense posture means they need space.

• A shake off when the dog is dry is their way of releasing tension.

TAIL:

• HAPPY: helicopter tail wagging, gentle or loose wag

• NOT HAPPY: high, stiff tail or tail between legs

Dogs communicate first through body language. If we do not get the message, they often escalate to a growl, then an air snap and finally a bite. Noticing what your dog is telling you at the body language stage helps alleviate further conflict. Determine the things that trigger your dog to feel stress and work to desensitize them to it. For example, if your puppy does not like being picked up and often growls at you when you do so, pair picking them up with a yummy treat! Doing this every time can change the way your dog feels about it. Try to make being picked up a pleasant experience and avoid picking them up when it is not necessary. If your puppy struggles when being picked up, be careful to only set them down once they relax so they learn that relaxing gets them put down, not struggling or growling.

No pet parent wants their dog to be in pain. But because they instinctively try to hide their pain and they can’t tell us when they are hurting, it’s up to us to recognize the subtle signs and to get them the help they need.

Many behaviors and physical changes can indicate that a dog is in pain. Learn how to recognize the signs of pain in dogs, what causes it, what you can do to help, and how to discuss your concerns with your vet.

Signs a Dog Is in Pain

Dogs feel pain just like humans do, but they don’t always show it in the same ways. A dog’s pain can become evident through physical symptoms, behavioral changes, and/or mobility issues. These might be subtle, so stay vigilant and never be afraid to ask your vet about anything that might signal that your dog is in pain.

Physical Symptoms

First, schedule an appointment with your veterinarian to figure out what the problem is. If your dog is in severe pain or has other scary symptoms, get them to a veterinarian immediately.

Your veterinarian will need to perform a physical exam and run some diagnostic tests. To pinpoint the problem, your vet may need to do X-rays, blood tests, or an ultrasound.

Stop or Modify Physical Activities With Your Pet

If your pet is only showing signs of pain during an activity, avoid it until you can talk to your veterinarian.

Your veterinarian will be able to help you figure out how to best help your pet, whether it is stopping that activity altogether or establishing modifications that will minimize pain.

Simple pain-reducing modifications to common activities can include:

Taking shorter walks

That’s why it can be helpful to take pictures or a video of your pet when they are showing signs of pain or discomfort, which they’re more likely to do at home than when they are stressed out at the veterinary clinic. Write down when they occur and what your pet was doing at the time.

This helps your vet understand the scenarios in which your dog is experiencing pain as well as the types of symptoms and signs of pain they are displaying.

Having video and pictures of your dog can also help your veterinarian to make the proper modifications to your routine and recommend other treatment options to help minimize the pain.

There are many veterinary treatments that can eliminate or reduce both acute and chronic pain. Talk with your veterinarian to understand what your dog’s treatment options are.

My dog was sprayed by a skunk! Now what??

My dog was sprayed by a skunk... NOW WHAT DO I DO?

This was several years ago, when Hades was little... but just as soon as you say "We never see skunks around here , it will never happen!" Or "What in the WORLD did you roll in?" .... And then it happens. The most important thing is to NOT GET THEM WET. Then mix this up. Luckily, you can make de-skunk shampoo from products around your house. Mix 3 to 4 parts 3% hydrogen peroxide to 1 part baking soda, along with a tablespoon or so of Dawn dish liquid detergent, and apply the mixture to your dog while it's still bubbling. It will be very thick.... Think thick pancake batter.

Put it ALL over your DRY stinky dog. If you are concerned about getting it in their eyes you can always make some up with baby shampoo for their head. Leave it on them at least 30 minutes or even longer if you are still explaining to Rover the error of his ways. I like to put them in a kennel (they WILL shake some of it off, so try to really mix it in well to their coat) THEN, rinse them off with water. And then laugh... because surely you will NEVER have to do this again…. Until you do!

Twitter user Jesse Dietrich asked a vet what was the most difficult part of his job.

The specialist answered without hesitation that it was the hardest for him to see how old or sick animals look for their owners with the eyes of their owners before going to sleep.

The fact is that 90% of owners don't want to be in a room with a dying animal.

People leave so that they don't see their pet leave. But they don't realize that it's in these last moments of life that their pet needs them most.

Veterinarians ask the owners to be close to the animals until the very end.

"It's inevitable that they die before you. Don't forget that you were the center of their life.

Maybe they were just a part of you. But they are also your family. No matter how hard it is, don't leave them."

Dont let them die in a room with a stranger in a place they dont like.

It is very painful for veterinarians to see how pets cannot find their owner during the last minutes of their life.

They don't understand why the owner left them. After all, they needed their owner's consolation.

Veterinarians do everything possible to ensure that animals are not so scared, but they are completely strangers to them.

Don't be a coward because it's too painful for you.

Think about the pet. Endure this pain for the sake of their sake.

The signs of sexual maturity in male dogs include lifting their leg to urine mark (even in the house), humping, and overprotectiveness. Some of these behaviours can start at an early age and intensify as they continue to mature until 12 months, or even older for large breeds. During this time they build more muscle as their growth plates close. This maturation of their musculoskeletal system can help prevent certain orthopedic injuries later in life, especially in large breeds. There is also some evidence that certain cancers may be less likely if they are allowed to have some time to reach sexually maturity. Male dogs that are left intact through adulthood and into their senior years can encounter prostate disease, perineal hernias, perianal tumors, and testicular tumors.

When should I neuter my male dog?

Small dogs do not have as many orthopedic issues, therefore it is fine to neuter them on the younger side at 6-12 months of age. For large dogs that are very prone to orthopedic injury/diseases we now recommend waiting to neuter until 9-18 months of age.

For female dogs:

The signs of sexual maturity in female dogs can have some similarity to the males, but they also will come into their first heat (estrous). This may mean up to two weeks of dripping blood, accompanied by moodiness and unwanted attention from male dogs from miles away. For most female dogs, this will happen around 9-10 months of age or older. Once in while we will see a smaller-breed dog show signs of their first heat around 6 months of age. We also see large breed dogs that do not develop their first heat until closer to, or beyond, 12 months of age. There is a significantly higher risk of performing a spay surgery when a dog is in heat due to fragility of blood vessels and propensity for them to bleed internally. Given that, we avoid performing spay surgery while a dog is in heat unless it is an emergency situation. By about a month after the heat cycle, the blood vessels are more stable and the spay surgery can be performed safely. However, after the first heat the uterus and blood vessels have changed irreversibly to a mature state and spay surgery is more challenging than in an immature dog. Benefits that female dogs can see from having spay surgery when they are closer to maturity include lower risk of orthopedic issues, a reduced risk of cancers (especially breast cancer), and a reduced risk of urinary incontinence.

When should I spay my female dog?

We recommend waiting until your dog is at least over 6 months and likely even older for larger dogs. The benefits are much more pronounced in larger dogs, but there is not a lot of difference for lap dogs. Studies have shown that large dogs spayed before 6 months of age experience some higher risk of orthopedic problems and certain cancers and that risk is statistically reduced at 12 months. What happens statistically at each age in between still needs more study. We do know that with each heat cycle there is an increased risk of mammary adenocarcinoma (breast cancer) and risk of pyometra (a life-threatening uterine infection requiring emergency surgery and intensive care). If we are able to allow female dogs to get as old as possible, but manage to spay them just before their first heat, this would seem like the ideal situation, but it is tricky to predict when that first heat will be. Knowing the family history can be helpful, but is still not an exact way to know when the first heat will occur.

The Nose KNOWS: Why Dogs Sniff… There

Let’s be honest — dogs do a lot of weird things, but few are as awkward (or as hilariously mortifying) as their habit of sniffing people’s private areas. You’ve probably been on the receiving end of this behavior: your dog beelines for a guest’s crotch the moment they walk in the door, or a stranger’s dog gets a little too up close and personal when you’re out and about.

Embarrassing? Absolutely.
Intentional? Not in the way we think.

Here’s the thing — your dog isn’t trying to make things weird. In fact, in the dog world, this behavior is the equivalent of a handshake or saying “nice to meet you.” When two dogs meet, a quick sniff of the rear is how they gather important information about one another — things like identity, sex, mood, health, and even if the dog is ready to mate. It's basically their version of reading a name tag and checking someone’s vibe.

�� Why Do They Sniff There on Humans?

Dogs have an incredibly powerful sense of smell — up to 100,000 times more sensitive than ours. While humans have around 5 million scent receptors in their nose, dogs are believed to have up to 220 million . That means they can detect things we couldn’t even imagine, and for them, scent is their #1 communication tool .

Just like dogs have apocrine scent glands near their rear ends (also known as anal glands), humans have a concentration of scent glands in the groin area. So when your dog gives a curious sniff down there, they’re not being rude — they’re just gathering info the same way they would with another dog. It might be a little too honest of a greeting for us, but it’s totally normal in their world.

�� What Is Your Dog Learning?

That quick sniff can tell your dog:

Whether you’re male or female
If you’ve been around other animals
Your emotional state (yep, stress has a scent!)
Even what you’ve eaten or where you’ve been

It’s kind of incredible... and a little unsettling. But mostly? It’s just how dogs connect with the world around them — including us.

The First Day Home With Your Puppy

The day you have been waiting for....

It’s your first day with your puppy and you want to begin bonding immediately.

Here are some tips to make sure the first day is the best it can be for your puppy, for you, and for your family.

Limit your puppy’s access. Too many new places, smells, and people at once may confuse him. Instead, let him explore a designated area where you are, too. Then introduce him to the rest of the house, one room at a time. This gives more opportunities to be praised for good behavior and to stop bad behavior in its tracks.
Choose a potty spot. Start by taking him to the outside area where you want him to eliminate. When he does relieve himself, use a command that you’ll stick to, like “go potty” and reward him with a special treat and praise.
Introduce him to his new family. If possible, do this one person at a time. Give him a chance to meet each of you quietly. Supervise young children . Discourage them from picking up the puppy. Let them hold him in their laps with your help.
Minimize stress and excitement. Don’t invite friends and neighbors over to meet him yet. That will be important very soon, but should not start on the first day.... reduce stress... sleeping a lot the first day is totally normal.
Introduce other family pets. Puppies are still developing their communication skills and don’t understand the rules set in place by adult dogs. As long as an adult dog’s behavior is appropriate when correcting a puppy, it’s okay if she growls a little. If the elder dog becomes agitated, separate or redirect the puppy.
Don’t interact with dogs outside your home . Because your puppy probably hasn’t gotten all of his shots , he shouldn’t interact with strange dogs or even walk where other dogs do. Wait until they have 4 sets of shots under their belt.
Start enforcing rules. The puppy needs to learn the house rules from the very beginning. Praise good behavior. Set your rules ahead of time and stick to them, for example: Where do you want puppy to sleep? Is puppy allowed on furniture? Can puppy have food scraps from the table? Are they allowed in the kitchen? Are they allowed to jump on people even as a puppy. It is much harder to change the rule later... what you allow now can be what you are stuck with.
Make a veterinary appointment. Your vet should give your puppy a checkup in the next few days.

Start the way you intend to go

Create a schedule and stick to it . Keep in mind:

Mealtime Young puppies eat three times a day. Put your puppy on a regular feeding schedule. What goes in on a regular schedule will come out on a regular schedule.
Potty breaks Every time your puppy eats, drinks, wakes up, plays, sniffs around the room — most young puppies have to eliminate at least every 45 minutes when awake. Pick the puppy up and carry him to the designated potty area. Never punish him for housetraining “mistakes.” ...Later yes... but not now. He will be in training for some time. When he eliminates outside, reward him immediately.
Playtime: Your puppy needs exercise and interaction with you . A word of caution: sustained, strenuous exercise (long runs, jumping) is not good for puppies, but playing with toys and with you, mental stimulation with puzzles, and running in the yard are great. A tired puppy is a good puppy.
Dreamland: Young puppies sleep a lot ; in fact, some will sleep 16-to-18 hours a day. Plan on several nap times during the day. You may need to put a crate in a quiet part of the house so he won’t be disturbed. At night, set a puppy bedtime and help him get used to the routine.

What about the first night?

Some puppies sleep through the night right from the start. Others may cry for a few nights. And some may not be able to hold it and will need a middle of the night trip outside – but this usually ends by age 4-5 months.

For many puppies, evening is the “witching hour,” and if you anticipate it by initiating play, he may use up some energy and settle down. An evening stroll gives him exercise and a chance to take a potty break. Be sure he potties right before bed.
Leave a radio on near his kennel for "White noise" to help block out all of the strange sounds. Bring home a blanket or stuffed toy that smells like your pup’s mother, and keep that in his crate.
A set bedtime makes his adjustment and house training easier for everyone. It doesn’t matter if it’s 8 p.m. or midnight, as long as it becomes a routine. Take him to his crate and help him settle down for the night – giving him a small treat when he goes in willingly.
If your puppy is not yet able to make it through the night, when he whines, quietly carry him out for a quick, boring potty break. Then put him back in the crate.
If the pup cries, do not put him in your bed unless that is where you want him to sleep . You can put the crate right next to your bed and put your hand inside to reassure him that you’re there. A crate is like a den, where a puppy won’t eliminate. The crate at this time should only be big enough for him to stand up and turn around. If the crate is too big, they will poop in one end and play at the other.

It is worth it...

With lots of affectionate contact with the family, consistent rules and routine, and rewards for good behavior , your puppy will quickly learn his place in his new “pack.”

Most importantly, you will establish a bond that will endure throughout his life.

Do you know what you are teaching them?

I have a bone to pick. Wow! I really hadn't planned a dog metaphor, but it works.

When a dog behaves badly...for example... growls at a child that walks by the food bowl. The person pulls the child far away from the bowl and says in a nice, sweet, sing-song voice "Now, now... fluffy.... don't do that!" They have just done 2 things. Number One.... taught the child to be afraid of the dog. Number Two... told the dog that their behavior is O.K. A dog can learn a lot of our language. They can certainly learn the most commonly used words: sit, stay, outside, no...(etc.). However, they ABSOLUTELY can read your body language, your tone of voice and your emotions. When you are using a baby voice to reprimand your dog, you are doing the exact opposite. In the previous example, here is what your dog heard…. “Oh what a good dog! What a great behavior!” Now, we know dogs learn by getting praise for good behavior, so you have just started down the wrong road. Have you ever seen a tiny terror… like a Chihuahua growl at someone? Same thing! They initially growled because they were afraid of a person… they were “doggy praised“ for the bad behavior…rinse and repeat for every person they see. And if you are lucky, they will try to bite that other person for good measure! O.K. yes, that was sarcasm, but it doesn’t mean it isn’t true.

And as for the younger two-legged human that visits your pack…. PLEASE , PLEASE, do not tell them on introduction to a dog “Oh! Are you afraid of this dog?” Because you just gave them the emotion to have. They may have been afraid of the new situation, or people watching them, or startled by seeing something their own size , eye to eye.. (which just happened to be a dog). Yes, of course, this child may have some history with being hurt by a dog in their past. That is different conversation. However, in the past years I have had little nieces and nephews visit our house and see our dogs walk by. The child is startled and starts to cry… someone says “Oh! Are you scared?”… Immediately, calmly and clearly I say, “No you’re not.” Nine times out of ten. They look at me with that “Oh… O.K.” look on their face. Moving on…….

�� Potty Training a Puppy: BEFORE You Grab That Coffee...

No really — put the mug down.
The very first thing you should do in the morning? Let that puppy outside!

☀️ First Things First: Early Morning = Go Time

Before your eyes are even fully open, that pup has been awake for a while — and their little bladder? It’s on a tight schedule. Whether you're working with a Rottweiler or any large breed, early consistency is key.

�� Kennel Setup: Bigger Isn’t Always Better

I love using a large crate when house-training, but it must have a divider . Why? Because dogs don’t like to potty where they sleep — if they can help it. But if the crate is too big, your pup might just use one end as a bathroom and snuggle up at the other.

With fast-growing breeds like Rottweilers, you'll be adjusting that divider often. They grow like weeds!

��️ A Crate is Not a Punishment — It’s a Safe Space

I hear this a lot: “I feel bad using a crate.”
But don’t. Dogs are den animals by nature. A crate gives them a sense of security and routine .

Yes, they may cry at first — that’s normal. They’re missing their littermates, adjusting to new surroundings. Make the space cozy with:

A soft blanket
A “snuggle buddy” stuffed animal
Calming sounds (radio or white noise)

And teach kids that the crate is your dog’s “bedroom” — a quiet zone, not a play zone. Later in life, when your dog feels overwhelmed or anxious, the crate becomes their safe retreat.

�� Potty Training Basics

Take your pup to the same outdoor spot every time.
Dogs learn by scent, so that familiar smell helps trigger what they’re supposed to do. Unfortunately, if they have an accident indoors and it’s not cleaned thoroughly, it teaches the wrong lesson. Clean the area well and use an enzyme-based spray to neutralize odors.

Pro tip: If they poop inside? Scoop it up and place it outside in the designated potty spot. You’re sending a very clear message.

��️ Name the Process While It’s Happening

Here’s a secret weapon: name the act while it’s happening.
When your pup squats or starts to go, say something like:
“Go potty!” or “Get your business done!” — calmly and consistently.

Say it every time they go outside to potty. Over time, they’ll associate the words with the action. This will make things so much easier down the road — especially when you're traveling, at the vet, or in unfamiliar places and need them to go on command.

⏰ Timing, Timing, Timing

Potty training takes time , patience , and tons of repetition .

Puppies need frequent potty breaks — at least every hour in the beginning.
Especially take them out 30 minutes after eating .
Expect a few false alarms — some pups will go once, move to a new surface, and then decide… “Oh wait, there’s more!”

Like toddlers, they’ll often get distracted mid-play and forget they needed to go — until it’s too late. And most puppies master the pee part before they consistently get the poop part right.

�� Outside Time ≠ Play Time (Yet)

In the early stages of training, try to separate potty time from play time . I know it’s tempting, but mixing the two can confuse your pup. For the first few weeks, follow this rhythm:

Outside = potty business
Inside = praise and attention
Playtime comes after progress

�� Celebrate the Wins

Every successful potty trip outside? Throw a little puppy party. Lots of praise. Maybe a treat. Let them know they nailed it.

Consistency is everything. Over time, your pup will understand what’s expected and you’ll both be a lot less stressed.

You’ve got this. Be patient. Be repetitive. Be kind.
Potty training won’t last forever — but the bond you’re building will.

Are Rottweilers Dangerous?

I bring Hades, my male Rottweiler, with me to my office, to the store.... through the drive thru....even through the carwash once... just once. He REALLY got nervous ....pacing back and forth... jumped to the back seat..... To be honest, I was nervous the first time I went through a car wash too ... So, O.K. no more carwashes. Yes, I could have helped him to handle it... but it just wasn't high on my list. I live in the country and my truck would probably fall apart if it had no mud to keep it together.

My point, is that he can handle calmly being around anyone and any situation. Now, he HAS learned to be protective of me. He has even had some extra training from an ex-Marine canine trainer. As I said, he goes everywhere with me. That is great. This is his job. As a member of my pack he has earned his rank as Beta Male (No, not ALPHA... that's my husband's spot.... but that's a discussion further down in this post. )

I run into people fairly often that see Hades and say they would NEVER want a Rottweiler.

Because... "aren't they.....

1. Mean

2. Aggressive

3. Loud

4. Smelly

5. Going to eat you out of house and home

6. (Fill in the blank with any other excuse you can think up)

My answer is this.... "It's how you raise your dog". You can raise your dog... ANY DOG to be aggressive and demanding. The meanest dogs I have ever seen are actually Chihuahuas! My dogs are raised with the Pack Mentality. It's natural to them. They learn their order in the pack. The two-legged pack members are ALWAYS higher in the pack then the four-legged ones. My husband and I are the Alphas... our children and grandchildren are below us in the pack. My dogs are below them. There is a VERY obvious pecking order with our dogs too. You can raise your dog to be respectful of their

place in your pack.

Can they be loud or smelly?

Again, that's how you train them and take care of them. You train your human children. You train your four legged children. ..... and give them BOTH a bath!

As for your dog eating you out of house and home?..... come meet my teenage son!

Have you ever felt your dog’s eyes following you, like they’re watching your every move? Maybe your dog stares at you while enjoying a chew toy or bone . Or, perhaps you enjoy sitting with your dog and gazing into each other’s eyes. Whatever the scenario, dogs spend a great deal of time staring at humans. And many dog owners spend a great deal of time wondering why.

Dogs Are Reading Us

More than almost any other animal on earth, dogs are in tune with humans. They sense our moods, follow our pointing gestures, and read us for information about what’s going to happen next. That means they stare at us a lot to gain knowledge about their environment. Essentially, they are waiting for us to do something that will impact them.

Dogs Are Trying to Tell Us Something

Staring also occurs when your dog is trying to get your attention or tell you something. For example, if it’s time for a potty break , your dog might sit by the door and gawk at you. Or, if your dog is hungry and you’re eating, staring can indicate a desire for you to share your food. It’s the canine equivalent of a tap on the shoulder.

Dogs Are Telling Us How They Feel

Your pup also uses eye contact to express emotions, both positive and negative. In their wolf ancestors, staring is considered threatening and rude. Some dogs still retain that attitude. That’s why you should never stare down strange dogs or hold dogs still to stare into their eyes. If a dog gives you a hard stare, with unblinking eyes and a stiff posture, back away and don’t make eye contact. You might see this in your own dog when there is a bone or other valued treat at stake.

Dogs and Humans Can Benefit from Staring

Most dog staring is a combination of affection and attention. While it may make you uncomfortable, your dog is most likely fascinated by you. So rather than discouraging that human-centric focus, you can make it work for both of you. First, be aware of the signals you give your dog. For example, are you saying sit with your words but something completely different with your body language? Help your dog understand your intentions by being consistent and clear.

The first week with your puppy.

When you bring your puppy home. It is SO EXCITING to show off the new baby. But that's just it... this is a new baby. Just like bringing home a new human baby, it is important to limit their exposure. New puppies have generally only had one or two sets of vaccinations when they get to their new home. The home they were born in has a controlled environment. No extra unknown dogs have come through the yard, kennels, or runs that could have been exposed to illnesses, especially one of the big SCARY ones.... PARVO.
